In June 2022, Hydren Academy concluded a free 3-day introductory Solar PV training for people who are interested in learning how solar works and how they can become entrepreneurs in renewable energy. The 20 participants selected to attend the fully packed free solar training cut across 6 States of the Federation. The participants were introduced to the fundamentals of Solar System, System components, System configuration, PV Sizing, Troubleshooting, Workplace Safety and a practical installation.
Hydren Academy held her maiden introductory solar training at the American Corner, Ikeja Lagos between June 8 to 9, 2022. The goal of the training was to educate people about solar PV installation and the role of solar energy in mitigating the adverse effects of climate change. Another goal of the training was to raise entrepreneurs in the renewable energy sector. The training was a hybrid setup, which includes both virtual and physical classes. The virtual class held from 8th – 9th June, 2022 while the face-to-face class held on June 10, 2022. There were three trainers in attendance to instruct the participants. They are: Engr. Oluremi Hamid, CEO, Hydren Energy; Engr. Tunde Oyeledun and Mr. John Mosindi.
Day one (1) of the training had 16 people in attendance; with 12 males and 4 females. The participants were introduced to renewable energy with a focus on solar energy. This was taken by Engr. Oluremi Hamid. She talked about the source of solar energy, which is the sun. She further explained the reason it is called renewable is because the supply is inexhaustible. Some of the advantages of solar energy such as the endless supply, its conversion not causing pollution or harming the environment were also mentioned.
The training continued with the second session taken by Engr.Tunde Oyeledun who talked about the components of a solar photovoltaic system which include solar panel, charge controller, inverter and battery. He explained the different types and functions of each of these components. He further talked about protection devices such as surge protector, fuses and circuit breakers, grounding/earthing system among others.
Day 2 of the training had 18 people in attendance; comprising 13 male and 5 female. The topics treated were PV system configuration and the maintenance/troubleshooting of a PV solar system.
Day 3 of the training was the concluding class, which was a practical class. There were 25 people in attendance. In attendance were two (2) Techwomen fellows; Ogo Maduewesi and Olasimbo Sojirin. The Deputy Public Affair Officer of the US Consulate Lagos, Jennifer Foltz was also present. The participants were introduced to the different safety drills and workplace safety needed as a solar engineer or installer. They were also engaged in the practical installation of a 0.3kw solar system. Participants were grouped into teams to carry out the installation.
